In 1970, the Calcutta International School society (CISS) was formed under the West Bengal Society's Regulation Act, 1961. Today, the school is a larger institution for the sons and daughters of expatriates, foreign passport holders, former Non-resident Indians, and the local community (in that order) but maintains it's exclusive character and reputation among other similar institutions.
CIS offer 'O' level and 'A' level curricula for the graduating classes and follows the UK National Strategy for the entire school curricula. It is a British Council affiliated center for London Examination from Edexcel International Centre No. 93058 and for Cambridge International Examinations (Centre No: IN218). At present CIS is exploring the possibiity of introducing the IBO Diploma Programme.
CIS offers three academic streams: Humanities, Sciences and Business Studies. The school's pedagogical philosophy is to impart quality education within the non-coercive regime of discipline, from kindergarten right up to 'A' levels. Accordingly, student numbers per class are limited to an average of 22. The school's academic record at both 'O' and 'A' level compares favourably with the best in the world.
All the conventional school level subjects are taught, besides languages, art and computer science in the upper school. It has fully equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. All classrooms are bright, well ventilated and air-conditioned during the hot summer months. Extra-mural activities include sports, elocution, music, debating, drama, dance, extempore speech training, public speaking, personality development, taekwondo, scouts and guides etc. CIS also has arrangements with some of the city's top clubs for training sessions in tennis and swimming.
The School is managed by the Calcutta International School Society (CISS), consisting exclusively of parents / guardians. CISS elects a Board of Governors (BOG) every year to formulate policies, monitor the budget and yearly plan and manage the assets. The Board of Governors appoints a school Director who, with the assistance the Principal and Business Manager, has responsibility for the school's day-to-day administration.
On the 30th October, Monday 2006, CIS has started functioning from its new premises at 724, Anandapur, Kolkata 700107. The building is spacious with a well-equipped campus in the green and unpolluted environs of Calcutta's Eastern Metropolitan By-Pass.
